Gill giddy to work with Zenger

Kansas University chose a man with deep local roots to be its next athletic director when it announced Sunday that Illinois State’s Sheahon Zenger had been hired.

The KU and K-State grad was born in Salina and lived in Hays and Lawrence, as well as Manhattan, among his various stops on his way to the athletic director job at KU.

In introducing Zenger today, KU also made available his employment agreement. Zenger's contract will run from Feb. 2, 2011 to June 30, 2015.

Among the perks that Zenger will receive:

• Membership at one of Lawrence's country clubs.

• The use of two automobiles.

• A scholarship suite at Memorial Stadium.

• A host of home and away football, men's basketball and women's basketball tickets.

But, in addition the perks, the the contract also outlines restrictions that seem to be an effort to combat some of the controversies that surrounded Zenger's predecessor, Lew Perkins, in recent years.

Zenger will be prohibited from using university planes for personal purposes. He's allowed to use the fitness equipment at KU, but his family is not. He's expected to know all of the restrictions and regulations regarding ethics of state employees.

Zenger's contract also includes a buyout should he choose to leave or if KU should terminate him without cause. If KU terminates the agreement without cause, KU owes Zenger up to two years of his salary. If Zenger terminates the contract, he'll be required to pay a sum equivalent to half of his annual salary.

Zenger was born in Salina on April 13, 1966, received his undergraduate (1987, English and secondary education) and master’s (1992, journalism and mass communications) degrees from Kansas State and his doctorate from KU (1996, educational policy and leadership). Zenger’s father, Weldon, also received a Ph.D. in education from KU while the family lived in Lawrence from 1968 to 1970.

Now that this is done, let's move on and win more games and championships. I don't see him blowing any coaches out right away.

While I agree with you that TG should go... you do realize that KUAC doesn't actually pay the majority of Gill's salary right?

This is a great choice. Kansas native with integrity. No more East coast swagger. Welcome!!

"If Zenger terminates the contract, he'll be required to pay a sum equivalent to half of his annual salary."

Is this a joke? Who in their right mind would sign that???? I'm glad that, although I make less than $450,000, if my job gets to the point that I am miserable beyond belief and I hate it -- I have the right to quit without owing my company half of my yearly salary. Geez.

Buyouts are fairly common for high-level athletic coaches and administrators. That's all this is.

Yeah, I realize.. I just think it's crazy! Half of a years salary is a big chunk of change.

If he leaves for another AD job, that university would more than likely pick that up for him.

Goofy contract, thank Perkins for that. I don't think anyone would sign that contract unless you don't expect a BCS AD job anytime soon. Cunningham can get a job like that soon. Can I be the first to mention the LJW had to fight to see the contract of Perkins.

Perkins was making $2 million per year and this guy gets $450K. Perkins used the plane to go see his daughter in Louisiana, his mother-in law in SC and this guys wife and kids can't even use the fitness equipment. Perkins should not be given the $2 million parachute. Make him sue the University for the money. I wish the new guy much success. It's too bad he has to keep the current regime for another year. I guess that way they can steal as much money as they can between now and then.

Bill Lee 3 years, 11 months ago

Don't make Perkins sue for the money because when he wins, KU will have to pay his legal fees, too. Let him go and learn from the experieince.

Actually this guy is being paid more than Lew was when Lew came to KU. If the new guy can double the budget the same way Lew did however, I'd say he deserves the same big bonuses. See this: http://www2.ljworld.com/news/analysis_opinion/columns/dolph_simons_jr/

It says in his contract he get the use of two automobiles. Since he has spent time in Kansas, hopefully he can read Kansas statue 8-2406. Apparently numerous members of the Athletic Department feel they work for various car dealerships in Kansas/Missouri.

You can always spot Athletic Department vehicles at Anderson Sport's Complex and The Fieldhouse with dealer tags and athletic department parking permits. I'm told this is an accepted practice and the car dealers who do this are called members of The Wheel Club. The car dealers sell the vehicles for a dollar and buy them back for a dollar after four months or so. In return the dealers get preferred treatment for athletic event tickets they purchase.

Also since the vehicle had a dealer tag and was never titled, it is sold as a demonstrator (not a used vehicle). I'm sure if your a popular member of the athletic department, buyers are lined up to pay top dollar for your four month old vehicle just to say this vehicle was driven by!!!!!!!!!

For the love of Pete! Perkins did NOT make 2 million a year. Somebody is on crack and drunk at the same time.

" He has an idiot for a boss and an alumni base full of meddlers.'

You've just defined every single AD position in the United States of America.

Thanks for stating the obvious.
