From the Lawrence Daily World for Jan. 2, 1911:

• “A drop of 47 degrees in eight hours was the feat performed by the temperature in Lawrence yesterday. At 10 o’clock yesterday morning the weather was warm and balmy with a temperature of 46 degrees above zero. Shortly after 10 o’clock the temperature began to drop and within an hour the cold wave could be felt very keenly. At 6 o’clock and 7 o’clock last night the thermometer registered 1 degree below zero. The snow began falling here at 1 o’clock yesterday and continued during the day. This morning nearly all trains on the local railroads are late. The Santa Fe experienced considerable trouble with its telegraph lines over the entire system. The wires were down between Emporia and Strong City last night.”
• “A fire alarm at 5:58 Saturday night brought the entire department to the corner of Mass. and Winthrop streets. Smoke seen issuing from the Bowersock had led a passer-by to turn in a fire alarm. When the department arrived they found a great quantity of smoke but very little blaze. The fire had originated under a private stairway in the theatre and had gained but little headway. A few buckets of water was sufficient to extinguish it.”
