25 years ago: School board tries to figure out where ninth graders belong

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Feb. 28, 1986:

  • During the final meeting of the middle-level education committee of the Lawrence school board, committee members voted to recommend that ninth-graders be moved out of the three junior high schools. They also recommended that the school board establish another committee to study whether ninth-graders should be in a nine-through-12 high school or grouped into what they termed a “mid-high” with 10th graders. Several committee were uncomfortable making decisions on whether ninth-graders would fit into high school, but they said they knew that they probably shouldn’t be grouped with seventh- and eighth-graders.
  • Jo Bryant, executive director of the Lawrence United Fund, said that she expected recent federal cuts would strip at least $303,000 from Lawrence human service agencies in the next year.
