25 years ago: City has plans for large tract of land south of Lawrence

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Feb. 27, 1986:

In a unanimous vote, the Lawrence-Douglas County Planning Commission had approved the use of a large plot of land in south Lawrence for an elderly housing complex and multi-family residential uses. The area in question was bounded roughly by Lawrence and Crestline, 27th and 31st streets. Specifically, the commissioners recommended that the city give Alpert Co. of Overland Park a permit to build the housing complex for the elderly on the south side of 27th Street, west of the (then) Wal-Mart location. Additionally, the commissioners recommended that the city annex about 41 acres between 27th and 31st streets, east of Lawrence Avenue. The site at that time included farm acreage and the Stable of Joy.
