40 years ago: Kansas AG continues to crack down on church Bingo games

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Feb. 26, 1971:

  • Atty. Gen. Vern Miller said that he was “not surprised” that the Kansas Senate had not passed the lottery amendment to the state constitution, and he reiterated that he would continue to crack down on all gambling until or unless the state laws were changed. Miller went on to warn churches, country clubs, private clubs, and fraternal organizations that he would not tolerate any form of gambling, including Bingo games.
  • In New Hampshire, Sen. George McGovern officially launched his presidential campaign, saying he would “go all the way” with campaigns in 8 to 10 other states. He was the first formally declared candidate for the Democratic nomination.
