25 years ago: Gov. Carlin suggests making Washburn a ‘branch’ of KU

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Feb. 26, 1986:

  • Lawrence firm LRM Industries had been selected to rebuild the two eastbound lanes of Sixth Street between Missouri and Alabama streets. The project was expected to cost $111,000. The contractor for the project was planning to meet with owners of businesses along the street to discuss how traffic problems were going to be handled during the construction.
  • During a recent lecture at Wichita State University, Kansas Gov. Carlin had suggested the possibility of making Washburn University a “branch” of Kansas University. KU Chancellor Gene Budig expressed some surprise at the comments, saying that the governor had not discussed the idea with any KU officials prior to his speech.
