40 years ago: City sanitation workers delayed by snowdrifts

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Feb. 25, 1971:

  • Lawrence sanitation crews were running slightly behind schedule but were hoping to be caught up by this evening. The delays came not from bad street conditions, but from the foot or more of snow that the workers were having to walk through at each residence before reaching the garbage cans.
  • In spite of a slick and slushy racecourse, Mrs. Barbara Rinehart, a 24-year-old wife and mother in Liberal, Kansas, had won the Shrove Tuesday Pancake Race, running the 415-yard course in 67.7 seconds to keep the title in the U.S. for another year. Her time was .3 of a second better than Miss Ruth Faulkner, who had run a similar course in Olney, England, earlier in the day.
