25 years ago: KU students show concern for nuclear threat

February 24, 2011

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Feb. 24, 1986:

  • Kansas University students, concerned about the threat of nuclear war, had formed the "Jayhawk Defense Initiative" and were pushing for a giant bomb shelter to be built under Mount Oread. The group's adviser said that the students were attempting to use a combination of shock and "black humor" to make a point about the need for nuclear disarmament.
  • The 43rd Annual Kansas Women's Bowling Association Tournament was getting underway at Royal Bowling Lanes, 3300 Iowa. More than 9,000 women from across the state were expected to participate in the tournament. Lawrence was one of only five Kansas cities at the time that had enough "quality bowling lanes" and motel rooms to handle the tournament.
