100 years ago: Newspaper attempts to recover scattered property after fire

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Feb. 24, 1911:

  • “While the Journal was being burned out the other day the linotype operator carried out the magazines and matrices and in his excitement turned over one set of the matrices to someone, whom he is now unable to remember. They are doubtless safe, but the party having them will have to notify the office. There are probably other things that were carried to safety by willing helpers and if so it would be well to call up the office so they could be gathered in.”
  • “Mrs. Elmira Hornsby, one of the earliest settlers of Lawrence, died at 11 o’clock today at her home in west Lawrence. She was a fine woman in every way and was held in high esteem by all who knew her.”
