Topeka City Council approves 2 projects for zoo

? Topeka Zoo director Brendan Wiley says two new capital improvement projects will help the zoo’s efforts to keep its accreditation.

The Topeka City Council unanimously approved the projects Tuesday, showing support for the zoo a month before the Association of Zoos and Aquariums considers whether to revoke the zoo’s accreditation.

The zoo will spend $112,115 to build a necropsy building and an estimated $170,000 to replace parts of a perimeter fence. The U.S. Department of Agriculture said last November that the fencing did not comply with federal rules.

The Topeka Capital-Journal reports that zoo association considered revoking the zoo’s accreditation last year, but tabled it for a year. It will consider the matter again at its March 20 meeting.
