Jefferson County prosecutors charge half-brother with attempted second-degree murder in Thursday shooting

A rural Lawrence man who was accused of shooting his half-brother during an argument early Thursday made a first appearance in court Friday morning.

Jefferson County prosecutors have charged 24-year-old Bryan E. Poeverlein with attempted second-degree murder and aggravated battery.

A Jefferson County judge in Oskaloosa set Poeverlein’s bond Friday morning at $50,000, cash or surety. A preliminary hearing in the case is scheduled for April 12.

Prosecutors accuse Poeverlein of shooting his 22-year-old half-brother around 2:30 a.m. during an argument the two men had at their residence in the 1700 block of Wellman Road, about 8 miles north of Lawrence.

Lawrence attorney Sarah Swain is representing Poeverlein.
