Kansas players Tyrel Reed and Mario Little talk to reporters following the Jayhawks' 84-68 loss to Kansas State on Feb. 14, 2011.

— If it merely had been a case of the Kansas University basketball team not having the humility to handle the prosperity of holding the No. 1 ranking in the nation, no big deal.

KU won’t have that problem again, after getting bullied, 84-68, Monday night in Bramlage Coliseum by a Kansas State team that rode its star to a season-saving victory. The Jayhawks (24-2) won’t play as No. 1 anymore, and the stink of such an awful performance ought to linger long enough to carry them into the postseason with enough sense to know if they don’t bring their best every night, they won’t last long.

The memory of a sea of purple spilling onto the court will create an edge, always a good thing to bring into March Madness.

It’s the threat of a recurring, self-defeating trait resurfacing at another inopportune time, the annoying sub-plot of an otherwise successful season, that could undermine KU’s attempt to get to Houston, site of the Final Four.

That, of course, would be the penchant for one of the Morris twins to act impulsively and get whistled for an intentional foul. It didn’t hurt his team when Markieff Morris got called for one against Missouri’s Justin Safford. Against K-State, Markieff’s arm made contact with Jacob Pullen’s face, which didn’t slow the senior guard from Chicago enough to keep him from torching KU with 38 points.

By that point in the game, Markieff’s twin, Marcus, had been whistled for two fouls. Markieff’s second foul, the intentional one, gave him a seat next to his brother. Thomas Robinson, recovering from knee surgery, wasn’t there to bail them out. That chore went to Jeff Withey, who couldn’t cut it defensively, and Mario Little, who was hell-bent on shooting Kansas back into it and kept firing blanks.

On a night Kansas was in too big a hurry all game, nobody hurried more than Little. Oh well, at least he led the team with five rebounds. And he’s not counted on to lead this team. That responsibility falls on the Morris twins, terrific players on most nights, the nights they don’t get in their own way.

Back during the nonconference portion of the schedule, it was Marcus Morris who unleashed a high elbow and got tossed from a road victory against California.

Days after Markieff’s loss of composure against Missouri, his coach, Bill Self, talked about how the twins are marked men and have to be aware of that. He mentioned referees think of them as a tandem, and when one twin does something foolish, both get branded as trouble-makers.

“We’ve addressed it consistently all year,” Self said then. “We’ve had different things to try to help them understand the importance of playing smart and that stuff all the time.”

Self expressed confidence the message had been absorbed.

“I really believe we’re not going to have any more issues with that moving forward,” Self said. “I don’t believe that will be the case at all.”

He believed it, and he was wrong. It’s not on him. It’s on the players to strike the proper balance and play intense, physical basketball without letting that spill into non-basketball plays that bring unnecessary whistles.

Pullen, intent on paying back Tyshawn Taylor for out-playing him in Lawrence, would have won this game even if Markieff hadn’t played just eight minutes in the first half, even if Marcus weren’t forced back into the game to play the rest of the half with two fouls because to do otherwise would have been to dig a deeper ditch.

Pullen has put so much on his back in this season of K-State underachieving a year after it overachieved all the way to the Elite Eight. At times, he’s taken too much upon himself and hasn’t looked like the same player.

He never looked better than he looked Monday, and he wasn’t going to let his team lose. Kansas resorted to a triangle-and-two and tried a platoon of defenders on him after Taylor couldn’t get near him. None of it worked because Pullen didn’t let it work. He drove so relentlessly to the hoop he attempted 19 free throws, made 15, and hit five of six three-point shots.

On this night, more than any, with Pullen going off, Robinson unavailable, the crowd jacked to dethrone No. 1 and a desperate team battling to pull it all together, composure was a must, and Kansas didn’t have it. Markieff returned in the second half, but he didn’t bring his multi-faceted game with him. In 20 minutes, he didn’t bring down a single rebound and scored three points. Marcus had 13 points, three rebounds, three steals and four turnovers. Taylor had one assist and six turnovers.

Aside from a costly turnover when Kansas was making a first-half run, reserve Elijah Johnson had done some nice things. He even slowed Pullen a little for a couple of solid defensive stretches. Then Johnson reached new heights, throwing down a dunk. He immediately took it to new depths, jawing at Jordan Henriquez-Roberts and getting whistled for a technical.

Trash-talking in self-worship with his team down 14 points and 5:55 left on the clock? That would be akin to a hitter popping out of the dugout for a ninth-inning curtain call after a solo shot with his team trailing, 9-1. Somebody please help me understand that line of thinking. On exactly what planet does that make even a shred of sense? Neptune? Jupiter? Mars? Where?

I've never witnessed a Kansas team that had less composure during a game. FOE was discarded for the Me generation.

This will sting for awhile. I hope they don't take this memory with them into March. Next year they will look back on this with the wisdom of more mature players and tell the fateful story to the rookies who will hopefully learn something from it.

I am getting really tired of KU's attitude. From Tyshawns' stupidity, to the twins' lack of class. Apparently it is okay with the Coach though. He just keeps looking the other way, and lets it happen.
I forsee an early exit from the tournament again this yr.

Same thoughts we have here with our Wichita Hawk watch group and have had for some time.

TopJayhawk 7 years, 4 months ago

Other than Reed and Morningstar, this team is not smart. Stupid is not too strong a word. It will cost us in the dance. We will be gone the first weekend.

irunsowhat 7 years, 4 months ago

Remember where Mr. Morningstar came from though...

I guess he at least learned his lesson, where as this Morris twins haven't. Grow up.

just_another_bozo_on_this_bus 7 years, 4 months ago

Markieff set a really bad pick. And to the extent that moving picks are always intentional fouls, it was as a good call, but one that apparently only gets called on one of the Morris twins. They need to be cognizant of the fact that the refs are singling them out by imposing a zero-tolerance policy. It's not fair, but it's a fact.

This game boiled down to three things--

  1. Pullen is by far the best guard in the league who has underperformed most of the year. He made up for it with a vengeance last night. And you can't give a player like that 19 free throws.

  2. No Thomas Robinson to come in for the Morris twins and provide a spark when their game isn't clicking.

  3. Just a general lack of energy on the part of the whole team. They were a half step behind all night, rather than a half step ahead as they've been the previous four games.

KUnlv13 7 years, 4 months ago

Respectfully disagree, Bozo.

That Mormon gent I don't care for too much, Fredette, is unfortunately the best guard in the nation. Not sure if he's a better fit-for-NBA player as Pullen; but time & time again against talented teams that Jimmer has torn it up.

just_another_bozo_on_this_bus 7 years, 4 months ago

I haven't seen much of Fredette, so I can't really make a fair comparison between the two. But, I said Pullen is the best guard in the league, not in the country.

Mandie Eutsler 7 years, 4 months ago

kunlv13, I believe he said best guard in the LEAGUE not the country. Although I must admit he looked like he could compete with anyone last night. Fredette is pretty impressive, we'll see how he does against serious competition...

Ya know, alot of teams have alot of talent. It's all in the coaching and who shows up at a given time. Bill has not been a proven "consistancy" coach as proven by the past post season appearances in the big dance. It still lingers with him as again proven lastnight. So what if he won once... he has the horses, he just needs to get them to "pull" at the same time . Until he resolves this personal issue, we'll go down early in the big dance, once again.

just_another_bozo_on_this_bus 7 years, 4 months ago

The fact that no team wins it all every year, or even comes close, shows that there is no coach since Wooden who has a lock on the "consistency" thing. And when your team is made up primarily of teenagers, no one ever will.

Steve Ashley 7 years, 4 months ago

Yeah but when you are one of the top 5 highest paid coaches in the country your fans expect a little more. It's not the loss, it's the size of the loss. We don't expect to win the tournament every year but when you have a top 10 team you need to at least get past the first 2 rounds.

We don't expect miracles but we should expect to not be embarrassed by the team wearing the Jawhawk uniform.

just_another_bozo_on_this_bus 7 years, 4 months ago

They played a road game against the team that had been picked to win the league, and maybe even contend for the national championship. They got outplayed by a very good team having a great night.

That doesn't mean that KU doesn't need to look at what went wrong, and find ways to fix that, but this wasn't a disaster. They just lost to a team that at least last night was better than they were.

Mandie Eutsler 7 years, 4 months ago

Your upset with a coach who averages less than 6 losses per season. (average being unfair considering most of those 45 losses happened in first 2 seasons, maybe average 3 losses per year since) He's won league title 6 of 8 seasons. 12 straight 20 win seasons. We have 2 losses this year in a really tough league. What more do you want? We haven't exited early this year. I'm sick of everyone blasting the coach when he has the highest win percentage of any coach since he started here. get over yourself, you can't win them all. I'm sure the boys have learned something from this and if they didn't then they don't deserve to win anything. There's always next year...

just_another_bozo_on_this_bus 7 years, 4 months ago

I hope you're not addressing me. I think Self is the one of the five or ten best coaches in the country right now, and one of the youngest, to boot. And I'd put all of those five or ten in a tie for best coach (because it's too subjective and fickle a profession to differentiate any more finely than that.)

Mandie Eutsler 7 years, 4 months ago

sorry bozo, @ kanbear. I can't stand how fickle our "fans" are. We lose 2 or 3 games per season and each time people are calling for his head. He can't play the game for them or live their lives. All he can do is bench them and the twins didn't play much last night, he did his job.

Jan Rolls 7 years, 4 months ago

There are 5 players on the court at a time that's why they call it a team. The writer puts a lot on the twins. Reed played well but I wonder why the writer failed to mention morningstar's 35 minutes and only 6 points? Did he not see morningstar on pullen in the 2nd half? You want attitude - you recurit kids and then you sit them on the bench all year while a 25 year old senior gets all the playing time because some writers and announcers call him mr. indispensible and a defensive whiz.

Janet Olin 7 years, 4 months ago

Tyshawn may be fast, but he is not a good player and cannot take care of the ball. Poor point guard play will continue to plague the Hawks unless Josh can step in or Elijah figures things out. We know Coach teaches the twins defense and inside play, but it makes one wonder if they're even coachable when they ignore him and play street ball (think Julian Wright, who is still uncoachable, even as a pro) Tyrel and Brady can't pull this off by themselves, not even with Thomas. I was beginning to think the twins were maturing, but I'm really disappointed.

Martin Shupert 7 years, 4 months ago

What disturbed me about TT was the fact that he made several mistakes and immediately threw his hands in the air to blame others on the team. One loose ball was amazing. Reed was much further away and you could see Taylor stop and look at Reed, thinking Reed would get it. Then he threw up his hands and barked at Reed. It was absurd. I was glad to see Elijah come in and do so well, then he inexplicably threw the ball into the third row of the sidelines and began yelling at a teammate. I think this team has issues from within. If it does, it's going to disintegrate before our eyes. We desperately need a point guard who can run the team and play defense. Selby and Johnson have failed to even come close to pushing Taylor out of that job in spite of the fact that Taylor has exhibited no leadership skills whatsoever. Sorry to say it, but this team seems on the verge of a meltdown. They either get it together as they were supposed to have done around TRob earlier, or they will fall apart. The Big Twelve Championship is gone. Texas appears to be able to beat us in their sleep so the Big XII Tournament even appears to be a pipe dream. K-State beat us with one player. This is NOT good. Do we expect to get a top seed? Perhaps when we get everyone back, a case could be made for it, but right now, we look like a 6 seed.

xfitter 7 years, 4 months ago

6 seed? really?! drama queen right here folks

Dana Brown 7 years, 4 months ago

Amen! While the same guys are in All the time there isnt enough flow in a highly talented rotation. Hmm

Mandie Eutsler 7 years, 4 months ago

I'm betting Coach knows more than you do. In case you haven't been watching, it's pretty evident to those of us who have, that Selby is more effective in a catch and shoot situation. Maybe you missed it, but his last 5 drives to the hoop came up empty. Every other game he's played he's lost the ball off a dribble. He's not there yet, but he will be and he'll run the point next season. That is unless he can average 21 pts as a shooting guard...

Mandie Eutsler 7 years, 4 months ago

We've won the last 6 league titles, and long overdue to lose one. Every team has bad games. We were missing 2 key players (I'm counting Selby here, he's just not ready to play as big of a role as we'd like him to). TT did not play well, and obviously being #1 didn't help us out. It seemed to me that we thought we could win with our good looks and the name on our jersey. Not to mention the series record for the last 20 years, it seemed as though all we had to do was show up. Once our boys saw that the Cats had come to play we couldn't get it together. It happens, and in the end it will be good for us.

Steve Miller 7 years, 4 months ago

With all of that said, they are going to stumble in the big dance, mark my words. History will repeat it's " Bill" self .

Steve Ashley 7 years, 4 months ago

Can we all agree that the Morris twins should go pro next year? That will give us a chance to clean up KU basketball and return it to the quality program it once was. I don't care how well they can play, there is no place for no class thugs in a Jawhawk uniform. KU basketball is more than just win's and losses.

Self needs to be a little more selective about the integrity of his players, not just their ability. He should have let John Calipari have these guys.

The Twins need to learn Self control! Selby needs to mature and shake the rust off! I'm spoiled as a Jayhawk fan and didn't see this butt whipping coming.

Calvin Mabry 7 years, 4 months ago

I could make excuses for the twins and their foul trouble but I won't. The fact is the refs are expecting them to screw up and and making calls on them that go un-called on other players on other teams. I don't like it but its a fact. Somehow they are going to have to learn to limit some aggressiveness and still play the game. Last night they simply tanked. Johnson on the other hand, is becoming much more a liability than an asset for this team. He constantly makes stupid turnovers and fouls and to get a T for taunting when you are getting your rear kicked is completely inexcusable. Bill self should encourage him to take his act somewhere else next year.

xfitter 7 years, 4 months ago

Started off with good points and then your post simply tanked! EJ is gonna be a beast next season, has never gotten a good chance this year to take over a game like his ability shows he could, absolutely no way Self would tell him to take a hike but nice try. I'm glad he said something after that dunk, atleast he was lit up and ready to go make another play after that monstrous dunk and tea bagging. He most likely didn't say anything worth warrenting a technical, just how the night was for the team.

fancy80 7 years, 4 months ago

I'm curious what EJ said. I hope it was something like "lick my balls, since they're hanging in your face!" I mean, that would be worth the technical and the two points K-State got for making the free throws.

I guess on the Morri, I just feel like there is a fine line between aggressive play and going too far. Sometimes they clearly do go too far, but I'll take the ocassional technical or intentional if they're being aggressive. Some of the stuff has been stupid though, like shoving the guy in the face in the Misery game. Please note that I did use the word ocassional. Every game is too much and yeah, now the refs are just looking for it. Pull it back a bit, but I still love them both and want to see them in Crimson and Blue next year.

Mandie Eutsler 7 years, 4 months ago

I agree fancy. EJ gets yanked out of the game every time he makes a mistake. I'm sure there is a reason for it, but to me it looks like he just can't be trusted. We don't see what happens in practice so we don't know why that happens but he's athletic and can leap tall buildings in a single bound. The morris twins have been marked ever since one of them bumped a ref their freshman year which didn't deserve the attention that it got. I'd say half the TF's they get they deserve but the rest is just unfair. I'd also like to point out that when tyrel gets an elbow to the face in an almost identical situation no intentional or technical foul was called. they didn't even go to the monitor. Just goes to show that no matter how close we came to getting back in the game, the refs would take us out of it. They did that because they watch film and review stats and get to know teams before they referee the game. They were waiting, whistles in hand for the first sign of aggressive play. Unfortunately our reputation precedes itself. We will have an uphill climb for the rest of the season. Foul trouble here we come!

hammerhawk 7 years, 4 months ago

FOE. Right. FULL OF EMOTION. And that spells problems.

xfitter 7 years, 4 months ago

You can't play emotionless, but poise has to be there. Self has talked with this team for a while now about making stops on defense and doing multiple times in a row in order to put teams away or get out of a hole. Last night maybe sunk the point in for the boys.

Bobo Fleming 7 years, 4 months ago

This has been coming for a while. First free throws have been a problem all year. Second Morris & Morris's ego has now expanded past their talent which is considerable. Third Teams soft, been soft all year and Self has been complaining about it but its not getting better. In 2008 their was a bar fight at Texas. Kahn and Jackson were tough brawlers and KU won the bar fight. This year there was another bar fight with Texas at Allen. No Kahn and Jackson. Ku lost the fight. Last night was the second bar fight of the season. KU got thrown around, kicked around, out played out thought, out coached, have I left anything out?

amesn 7 years, 4 months ago

Actually KU lost at Texas in 08'...but I get your point

GerryFey 7 years, 4 months ago

Keegan, I agree with you all the way up to when you admonished EJ for his reaction following his alley-oop slam. (First off, I have to say, that was one of the most amazing dunks I've seen this year. I mean, he took it from way down low and brought it down with authority....but of course, I digress). I really don't think he was taunting the K-State player. I think he was yelling to get out frustration for what I'm sure he was feeling all night long. Should he have done it? Maybe not, but the taunting foul was a bit much, and of all the things that happened last night, your putting it next to the Morris twins' actions (and Taylor too, who was doing a lot of pouting all night long) is over the top. What the replay and you'll see there was no malice in EJ's actions....regardless, I do agree with the lack of composure, and the boys are going to have to figure that out starting now.

GerryFey 7 years, 4 months ago

Senegal66025, I'm not following you on the bar fight theme....we want KU to be tough, but when the Morris' get called for intentional fouls we don't like it? There needs to be a mean streak on this team. The key is somehow the message has to sink in to the Morris' that it's the one extra thing they do at the end that usually gets them in trouble. It's a tough line to walk, but as you said, Kahn and Jackson were able to walk it. And ease off EJ a bit Yogi. The guy gets to play like 8 minutes a game. He's a young guy and he'll be fine.

Larry Bauerle Jr. 7 years, 4 months ago

I must have missed the forecast for "falling sky" today. My gosh people, it was one game. No consistency in Coach Self? Seven conference titles in a row isn't consistency? Unfortunately, so many see the entire season as 6 games. That's too bad. Do their behaviors on the court need to change? Yes. Are we all a bunch of spoiled, whiny brats? Yes.

Laura Smysor 7 years, 4 months ago

Exactly!!! Coach Self is a great coach. We've lost two games this year. Only two. We are lucky to have Coach Self and Coach Manning. Quit whining and be thankful.

Steve Miller 7 years, 4 months ago

Actually they are so dam good that they are now at the point where the coach needs to teach them how to manage their goodness. It is rather aparent that he has failed at this time. If he is not successful quickly, they are going to be doomed in terms of going very far from here on out as the contraversy is going to consume them. Now you see what each individual is really all about..

jessanddaron 7 years, 4 months ago

Keegan, That was the most insane alley oops I've seen all season hands down. Give the kid credit for not just walking off after he completely physically dominated three defenders. He was more "celebrating" to himself while turned towards Henriquez-Roberts. If you don't get hyped over one of your personal best plays then I think you're a robot with no feelings. If he would have actually said something it, Henriquez-Roberts would have made it clear with his body language.

Mandie Eutsler 7 years, 4 months ago

You are correct sir! Keegan is a 'Cuse fan, cut him a break. Deep down he hates us and probably still watches replays of Melo in that championship game and dreams of a marriage proposal. Get over it, Keegan. I doubt he's into middle aged, overweight, pasty white guys who smell like cheese...

monarchs20 7 years, 4 months ago

I'm sorry, that was a horrible call on the elbow by Morris. Pullen ran in between he and Kelly and ran into the elbow. It was a horrible call and the video showed it clearly. It wasn't intentional at all.

xfitter 7 years, 4 months ago

Wasnt even his elbow it was his hand/fist that was already on the defender he was setting a pick on. It was a case of the ref watching for dirty play on the twins and not the game for what was happening. Again if the refs are watching 2 players on the court when there are 8 others out there than there is a ton of the game that is being missed and KSUs big men capitalized on it by being physical and not getting whistled for everything they should have.

Bobo Fleming 7 years, 4 months ago

I dont think its tough to throw elbows at a guy that isnt looking. I think its tough to body up and not get pushed around. Also to get into the mix underneath the basket and not look to shoot threes at the top of the key.

Mandie Eutsler 7 years, 4 months ago

Funny, because Morris was putting a body on someone setting a pick when Pullen ran into him. I don't know what made him think he could fit between those two. It seemed that Morris was trying to create a lane for a guard to drive the hoop. Unfair call.

xclusive85 7 years, 4 months ago

You are so right about the twins! I wish they would spend more time around Wayne Simien! He had some problems early as well, but corrected them. He can show them the way!

BrianR 7 years, 4 months ago

Is the clip of the 'intentional foul' anywhere online? What I saw was Morris turning with his arms in a natural position and Pullen charging into them. I would like another look at that.

Judgesmails 7 years, 4 months ago

Hey experts of the LJW - they've lost two games all year. Yea, they all suck!

Keegan, i know in your days they didnt have alleyoop jams over 7 footers into the peach basket, but that was a mean dunk by ej. Lighten up.

jyhwkr 7 years, 4 months ago

Seriously, I love how after two losses we are the worst team in college basketball and all of a sudden KU hoops is a huge disaster. I'm sick of the dirty play by the twins, careless turnovers and immaturity too but come on these are our Jayhawks. What happened to supporting our team through thick and thin? Yes, they had an awful game in Manhattan but you people make it sound like this is the worst team in the league. I'm sorry but the good outweighs the bad in my opinion, I'll take 24-2 any day.

jonas_opines 7 years, 4 months ago

Some Jayhawk fans do remind me of spoiled debutantes.

"Daddy didn't give me another championship!" "Daddy didn't give me an undefeated season!"

It probably goes with an elite team. I'm sure that UNC, Duke, and Kentucky are the same.

Well, maybe not Kentucky, they were less than elite for a span of time recently.

jonas_opines 7 years, 4 months ago

Both the tech calls in the game were crap. But the Morris twins in particular need to realize that they've made a reputation for themselves with a few dumb moves, and now they have to live it down.

bstew34864 7 years, 4 months ago

Here are my points:

  1. K-State played a heck of a game. I've watched them play all year and this is by far the best they have played. If they play like this against Texas they have a good chance of winning.

  2. While the sky is not falling this loss should concern true jayhawk fans. Yeah K-State played great, but the Jayhawks played terrible. Missed free throws, ridiculous turnovers, bad fouls, and just all around lazy and incoherent play. But the worst thing was how the Jayhawks started arguing between themselves as the ship was going down. I have never seen this much infighting among a jayhawk squad. Self needs to get this under control and under control now.

  3. Stay off of the back of the twins. If it were not for the twins we would have lost many more games. They had a bad game and while markieff did foul Pullen it certainly should not have resulted in a Technical. That was a baaad call.

  4. Solutions:

    • Bench Tyshawn. He does not take care of the ball well enogh to be a consistent point guard. And his decision making is suspect at best. He continues to make the same mistakes he did as a freshman and sophmore. Self should have Tyshawn come off the bench to add a spark.

    • Either Elija cleans up his attitude or he should sit on the bench the bench the rest of the year. This kid has tons of talent but is making mistakes because he is not a true point guard. He is not a break down guard which is what you need in your point guards of today.

    • Let Selby run point and live with his mistakes. At least he can shoot and has the ability to break people down. By the way, his defense has become much better.

    • You have to live with Withey and let him play through the mistakes. Lord knows coach Self has given tyshawn more rope than anyone on the team.

    • Mario is shooting to much and Releford is not getting to play enough. Releford is solid and plays great defense.

    • The unsung hero of the team is Tyrel Reed. he just goes out and does his job. He is solid in every aspect of the game. I would like to see him have the ball in his hands more so he can drive more.

Finally, this game reminded me of how we always lose in the NCAA. Quick guard who can penetrate and hit threes. A defense that stops our 3 point shooters from getting good looks. And big low post bodies who can body up and stand their own against the twins. Coach needs to make better adjustments during the game when our good stuff isn't working. Like running two guys at Pullen to make someone else beat us.

ok i'll stop ranting now. I think I got it all out of my system.

Selby doesn't seem to be in good enough shape to be full time starter. I'm surprised by this, but agree that he needs more time.

Both Reed and Morningstar lack the athletic ability to finish dribble drives and lack the foot speed to shut down the quick guard.

This team is really talented offensively, but they have some serious holes when they aren't taking care of the ball or shooting well.

I think they might make the final four if they get the right matchups, but they could easily get beat in the 2nd round.

In what way has Selfs recruiting dropped off? Please give details in explanation with actual facts that prove your point.

Brian Conrad 7 years, 4 months ago

pigballin you are way off base. we have the deepest team in the country.. makes recruiting little tough. Self recruits better "teams" than cheating Calipari.. Have you been watching all "the talent in Texas the last few years??? Self recruits teams. 6 of last 7 big 12 champs and you are braggin on Texas with one good year? Did you watch Texas last year? how many final fours and National Champs for Texas, MU, KSU or any big 12 team???? KU will be the team to beat for years to come. KU has very good chance to get 3 huge recruits still this year. coaches in past would be hard pressed to get top 100 players . Selby and X the highest rated players in 20 years. T Rob huge, EJ 5 star, Little highest ranked juco in america.. yeah tuuurrrrible just tuuurrrible Self not the problem .<

Brian Conrad 7 years, 4 months ago

T Rob. X . Mario. EJ , Selby ..... pigballin think before you type.. Texas has had many better "rated classes" and first chance to win big 12 outright... are you serious. 6 in a row and you think Coach is the problem. you could be the worst poster in history.

jyhwkr 7 years, 4 months ago

Yes, please explain. I don't see that happening at all. And if it does happen you and the rest of the haters will be crying for the twins and the rest of the 10/11 team that has taken us to 24-2 in mid-february. You people call yourselves fans but all you do is bash your own when the going gets tough.

You can teach skills. You can't teach class.

This team could exit the first round of the tourney. Or it could make it to the title game. Honestly, I think it's up to the players; Coach Self very rarely gets outcoached. I don't put either loss this year on his shoulders.

Let's see if the team comes together the way the team in '08 did. What was that...a players' dinner at Denny's or IHOP or something and then they rattled off 14 straight?

rgh 7 years, 4 months ago

The players should be ashamed and the coaches need to do more to stop this junk. I guess without Cole and Sherron to keep them calm they figure they have the run of the campus. Tyshawn fighting with football players and even Elijia getting the "T" for mouthing off on what would have been a top 10 ESPN highlight. These guys need to SHUT up and just play ball. If you dunk; get back on defense. If you foul; hand the ball to the ref and go about your business. Whining won't take the foul off the board.

And could someone get it through Brent Musburger's head that Mario is pronounced like the old video game and not like Mary0? Come on, you're suppose to know your names and background. Just listen to the PA announcers (home or away).

xfitter 7 years, 4 months ago

You mean the fight with the football players, that happened last season? Last season when your calming influences of Sherron and Cole were here? Whining about that one still wont help the team to move on. You want emotionless robots out there playing basketball for you to watch? Too bad in sports emotions run high so you don't have that option. Do you even have the slightest clue how much adrenaline was pumping through EJ after that monstronsity of an alley-oop that was over a 7footer?! Only way that deserved a technical is if EJ asked henriquez-roberts how his nuts tasted after he teabagged him and even then it should have been AND1 for us on that play. Snobby fans need to quit bashing the team after they lost their 5th game in two seasons, rally the troops or get off the wagon.

I think Bobby Knight called Markieff, Marquis. I thought for a moment that instead of twins, we had triplets. How cool would that be?

This team runs on favortism PERIOD. It's win with Morningstar and Reed at all cost. HCBS is not a great coach he's a great recruiter. If Arron Affalo doesn't leave early for the NBA then UCLA cuts down the nets. Please don't say Julian Wright "UCLA 68 Kansas 55"

Every since 2008 NC all that has been is micro-manage because he can't figure out how he won it. EJ, Releford and Little and at one point Brady have been having to play looking over their shoulder. One bad pass then YANK!!!! That makes a player play tentative.

HCBS talks about dribble drive but doesn't have the ability to simply say bend at the knees-punch on the gas and shoot that mid-range jumper in a open area in the lane. That takes away the double team on the bigs. Reed is a defensive liability he is being posted-up and TT is not a basketball player period he's an athlete. The whole team has a fundamental problem on defense. None of them bend at their knees they bend at the back. This is probably the best talent assembled since the champion Runnin Rebels but they play as if they are robots or puppets and that is a direct extension of how he played.

New starters and rotation

PG Selby 6-2------------- 6-2 Reed SG Little 6-6-------------- 6-4 EJ C Markieff 6-10---------- 6-9 T-Rob SF Releford 6-6--------- 6-4 Morningstar PF Marcus 6-9

Once up by 10 then go Selby 6-2 ------------------ 6-4 EJ Reed 6-2------------------- 6-4 Morningstar T-Rob 6-9------------------ 7-0 Withey Morris 6-10----------------- 6-6 Releford Morris 6-9----------------- 6-6 Little

Tyshawn had a bad game last night granted, but has anyone bothered to check out his assist to turnover ratio?? Leave him alone...the team, with ONE exception of last night, meshes better when he's in there.

brett conrad 7 years, 4 months ago

Twins defense is terrible for being jrs. They cant guard their shadow. 2 losses this season they got destroyed inside. Coach Manning has to vomit watching their defense. Sorry too soft for NBA and character is in question.

After KU so quickly canned Mangino for poking a player in the chest, I imagine Self is walking on eggshells this year. KU's basketball program needs a humility program, but it's not just Self's problem or fault. Nearly this entire town seems to think, act and treat the KU basketball team as superstars, so of course they have oversized egos. Off the top of my head, I don't have any suggestions on how to teach humility to college-aged kids, particularly ones who are talented. Some form of community service? I really don't know. I don't know how any college kid is even able to go to classes, study, do homework AND do some form of extracurricular activity as time-consuming as a sports program, I really don't. And this late in the season, sitting them out a few games just punishes the whole team. But then, maybe, getting the rest of their teammates T'd off enough is what might work.

fancy80 7 years, 4 months ago

I coudln't disagree more...HCBS is NOT walking on eggshells and the basketball program does NOT need a humility program. Yep, you're entitled to your opinion, and you're entitled to share it on LJWorld, but you're either a dork or have a very short memory. HCBS has said this is the best team he has coached in terms of how they get along, the chemistry they have, and (lest you've forgotten), the support they showed Trob just a few short weeks ago touched the nation. Now, you're saying they all have oversized egos. Okay, riiiight! How many of them do you know personally? How do you know they have oversized egos? Or are you one of the "fans" that heard Bobby Knight's speculation about what he thinks the players are thinking and decided that it must be true? I mean, that doesn't even make sense. If they all had oversized egos, they would not have the team chemistry that they have. This is what I hate about KU "fans". One loss (every team has a few every year...)and all of a sudden, the fans, reporters, sports talk guys, etc. want to bag on the players. It's fine to be disappointed and talk about lackluster performance, no defense, etc.. It's not okay to start name calling and putting these kids down (who 98 percent of the time, do everything right - go to class, support their teammates, stay after the game to sign autographs for fans, help opponents up, study, try to stay out of trouble, help elderly ladies cross the road (okay, I made that part up), but jeez people, they aren't perfect and they are young men (18 - 21, 26 if you count Brady). All this from "fans" that our players say are the best in the country. Wow! I'd sure hate to see the "bad" fans. I hate that we lost the game, I hate the fashion in which we lost the game, but I still support all of our players and I appreciate all that they do. Rock Chalk Jayhawk...

Brian Conrad 7 years, 4 months ago

the reason for the "BAD" fans is this team very seldom fun to watch. the EJ trash talk was one of the worst ... hard to be behind a team with point guard that seem to care less about the ball . big men that know other teams are tempting them and still let the team and fans down by acting like cry babies. JUST play. This team will not make sweet 16 with 4 players out of control. Team goes as the point goes ... completely out of control. Sorry but TT has had more turnovers that kill the team ,than clutch plays that win games ... bad bad sign. But what can Self do? . EJ looses his mind. Selby would have been great with more games and less Tyshawn. catch 22 very late in season. Tyshawn has skills to get to final four .. but he also has the poor point guard value for the ball. if he does not take his turnovers down headed for loss early in NCAA . this team does not have Mental toughness!!! Physical yes but when 2 or 3 players on the team continue to make crazy bad decisions... kills the direction of the whole game. yes this team has only 2 losses.. but have watched several hundred KU games and this team really scares me for early exit. talent yes composure NO! Loved Self BENCHING the twins should have sent EJ to the lockers. time for the Larry Brown. we have second in big 12 ... so bench someone making idiot plays.. another loss will not kill us but this team needs to really get it. let them know the are not untouchable. regular starters , but couple poor decisions let them sit a bit. be ready to pull anybody if they act like babies. they can get plenty of exercise running laps after the game. EJ can you not see the chance you have? Self begging for someone step forward and you messed in your nest. To all the Brady haters.. he is saving our behinds. at least he has slowed up on the bonehead decisions... Reed only player on the team with a lock to be playing in final minute of a game. Twins may have been ejected. Tyshawn may be dejected. All this said TT plays sooo hard , I love that , just work to make the good play and it will turn out great! play to make sports center and you hurt yourself and the team. T Rob the real key to this team. he makes the Twins better and we can play with 2 guards if 3 are out of control.

  1. K-State played a heck of a game. I've watched them play all year and this is by far the best they have played.
I personally thought he did great job letting the Twins and EJ watch the behind kicking from the bench.
loss to OSU in 08 was bad but the infighting and crybaby crud.. just awful. let us all down . can live with another loss but play the game with respect for the school .SHUT UP AND PLAY!

Solutions: - Start Selby. Tyshawn does not take care of the ball well enough. And his decision making is suspect at best. team plays like their point guard . no value for the ball . Lower his minutes Tyshawn can come off the bench to add a spark. - Either Elija cleans up his attitude or he should sit on the bench . This kid has tons of talent but never trash talk gettin you behind whipped , should have went straight to the locker room

  • Let Selby run point and live with his mistakes. ( less than T will make). At least he can shoot and has the ability to break people down. his defense has become much better.

Self has given Tyshawn more rope than anyone on the team. mainly because no one steps up to take the job. slow down when you get across mid court. stupid turnovers. pass to the passer. your best asset is starting the break. then be a point guard... give the ball to the shooters and better passers. can live with your driving the goal just have an option to pass.

Releford is not getting to play enough. Releford is solid and plays great defense. And he will not make a arsssh of himself

  • The unsung hero of the team is Reed. he just goes out and does his job. He is solid
