40 years ago: State fire marshal investigates fire at Haskell

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Feb. 15, 1971:

  • State fire marshal Robert W. Wolfe was visiting the Haskell campus to investigate a fire that had destroyed Sacajawea Hall on the previous day. The 80-year-old building had housed the home economics, needle trades, practical nursing and medical technologist classrooms and laboratories. The fire had resulted in $100,000 to $150,000 in damages to the building and its contents, including about $20,000 worth of medical laboratory equipment that had been purchased the previous fall.
  • The upcoming Kansas-Missouri basketball game was already a sellout, with an attendance of 17,000 assured. There were, however, tickets still available for the two remaining home games against Oklahoma and Nebraska in March.
