Kansas Cosmosphere, salt museum financially strong despite dip in attendance

? Attendance at Hutchinson’s two main museums slipped last year, but officials say both attractions are financially stable.

The Kansas Cosmosphere and Space Museum had a 7.5 percent drop in attendance last year, and the Kansas Underground Salt Museum was down 5.8 percent.

Christopher Orwoll, president and CEO at the Cosmosphere, says attendance fell during the school year because of drop in school field trips. But it had revenues at $198,000, far higher than earlier estimates of $68,000.

The Hutchinson News reported Monday that Linda Schmitt, executive director of the Reno County Historical Society, says the salt museum ended the year with $26,000 in net income.
