Topeka ? Representatives from Kansas law enforcement agencies are urging senators to strike a balance in rewriting the state’s racial profiling laws.

One concern aired Wednesday during a Federal and State Affairs Committee hearing was the costs placed on law enforcement and communities to conduct training and collect data. Another concern was protecting the due process rights of officers accused of inappropriate actions.

Two bills with similar language are before the committee. Both would replace the term racial profiling with biased policing. That term is used more frequently to describe behavior that targets individuals because of race, gender, ethnicity, religious dress or national origin.

A governor’s task force on racial profiling is recommending changes in the law after nearly five years of study.

Hearings on the bills continue Thursday.
