Department of Defense announces changes in leadership at Fort Riley

? The Department of Defense has announced changes in the leadership of Fort Riley’s 1st Infantry Division.

Defense Secretary Robert Gates has announced that President Barack Obama has nominated Maj. Gen. Vincent Brooks to be promoted to the rank of lieutenant general and given a new assignment. Brooks will become commanding general of the U.S. Army Central Command and head of the Third U.S. Army at Fort McPherson, Ga.

Nominated to replace Brooks is Maj. Gen. William C. Mayville. His last assignment was deputy chief of staff for operations with the International Security Assistance Force in Afghanistan.

Brooks recently returned from southern Iraq where the 1st Infantry Division headquarters assisted with the transition of control over the region to Iraqi forces.

Fort Riley is located about 60 miles west of Topeka.
