25 years ago: City commissioners emphasize need to expand Sixth Street

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Feb. 8, 1986:

Lawrence city commissioners were convinced that current problems on Sixth Street were likely to only get worse as the city’s westward growth continued. The city had already applied for a $2.2 million state economic development grant but had received no word about it. The grant would be used to widen Sixth Street from Rockledge Road to the western city limits, which were then located near Monterey Way. Traffic counts on Sixth were already showing an increase, and use of the road was expected to grow even more with planned developments such as the new Dillon “super store” at Sixth and Lawrence and the Student Loan Marketing Assn. at Sixth and Iowa.
