25 years ago: Proposed resolution would ban ‘vicious’ dogs

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Feb. 7, 1986:

  • A proposed countywide resolution that would ban all “vicious” dogs, rather than any specific breed, had won support from representatives of local municipalities. The proposal would be discussed again by city and county officials before being brought up for a final vote with the Douglas County Commission. A draft of the resolution defined a “vicious” dog as any dog whose owner “knows or has reason to know has a propensity, tendency or disposition to attack unprovoked, to cause injury or to otherwise endanger the safety of human beings” and which had attacked or attempted to attack a human.
  • Wanda Dykstra’s first-grade students at Cordley School learned exactly how many points make 100 – and had won a treat in the process. Ms. Dykstra had promised her class that if the Kansas University basketball team scored exactly 100 points against Colorado, she would buy her students a pizza. The final score was Colorado, 64; KU, 100.
