25 years ago: Lawrence city commissioners tour municipal airport

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Feb. 4, 1986:

  • The Lawrence Municipal Airport had been the site of a tour by Lawrence city commissioners on the previous day. Commissioners were shown the 50-year-old hangar, whose bricks were crumbling and doors were bulging. Lloyd Hetrick, manager of Air Services, had proposed that the city build a new hangar adjacent to the new terminal building, which was nearing completion.
  • Security at Lawrence High School basketball games was being increased in light of some confrontations in recent months between LHS students and their opponents from other schools. “These rivalries haven’t brought out the best in some kids,” said LHS Principal Brad Tate.
  • A proposal for a rail-served industrial park east of Lawrence had won praise from individual city and county commissioners, but formal approval for the project was still pending.
