40 years ago: City, county discuss joint government complex

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Feb. 3, 1971:

  • City and county commissions were discussing the possible creation of a combination Lawrence-Douglas County government complex. Originally, the plan was to construct a joint law envorcement and judicial building. Further plans under consideration included an additional wing for administrative offices.
  • The U.S. Postal Service announced plans to raise rates for virtually all classes of postage beginning in May. First-class stamps would rise from six to eight cents, while airmail stamps would go from 10 to 11 cents.
  • A bill was introduced into the Kansas House today which would license bingo in the state. An amendment to reduce the voting age to 18, which had been scheduled for debate and possible amendment today, had been posponed.
