Emporia woman accused of abandoning newborn found competent to stand trial

An Emporia woman accused of abandoning her newborn baby in a trash bin has been found competent to stand trial.

Christina Devine is charged with attempted first-degree murder after her 7-pound, 10-ounce baby was found alive in a trash bin at an Emporia apartment complex in October.

KVOE reports a Lyon County judge declared her fit for trial Tuesday morning, but put other pretrial decisions on hold because of a strong winter storm that closed the courthouse at 10 a.m.

Devine was evaluated by the Mental Health Center of East Central Kansas.

Her motions hearing has been continued to Feb. 17, and her trial tentatively is scheduled for Feb. 28.
