— Kansas State coach Frank Martin says forward Wally Judge has quit the team.

Martin announced the departure of the 6-foot-9 sophomore Monday afternoon, quoting Judge as saying he was unhappy.

Judge had been in and out of the Wildcats lineup this season.

He played in 17 of Kansas State’s 22 games, averaging 5.5 points, 3.8 rebounds and 15.2 minutes. He started 11 games early in the season, but missed five for personal or disciplinary reasons.

Martin said he wasn’t surprised.

“I kind of saw it coming with some of his emotional situations,” Martin said at his regularly scheduled news conference. “He just has not been enjoying it. He told me today that he thinks it’s time for a change.”

Judge played 17 minutes in Saturday’s 90-66 loss at then-No. 6 Kansas, scoring five points and grabbing two rebounds before fouling out.

His departure is the latest tremor in what started as a promising year for the Wildcats (14-8, 2-5 Big 12), who began as preseason favorites to win the conference but now rank only above 1-6 Iowa State in Big 12 play.

Freddy Asprilla, a 6-10 junior-college transfer and Colombia native who had been expected to add heft and offense inside this year, abruptly quit the program in early January.

The Wildcats are 5-6 overall since Dec. 21, when senior guard and acknowledged team leader Jacob Pullen was suspended for three games and forward Curtis Kelly for six after questions were raised about clothing they had obtained at a Manhattan department store.

Kansas State won a school-record 29 games last year and advanced to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Tournament.

Kelly is next. Without him, KSU may not win another game this season. Martin was dealt a bad hand this year. It's not necessarily all his doing. Sure he can seem like a lunatic on court with those "wild-eyes," but that's part of his schtick. The man knows how to coach basketball. This must be one of the farthest falls a Div. 1 team has had for a long time. From #3, and selected to win Big 12, one of college basketball's toughest conferences, to falling out of the top 25 and very likely falling out of postseason tourny play...including NIT. Sad.

Not even a remote comparison. Galindo reluctantly left for family reasons. Micah Downs was a head case with an armchair coach for a dad -- he left because his girlfriend was going to break up with him. Giddens was a criminal punk. Good riddance to the last two. And where did Martin win a Championship?

I love kicking the kittykats around, even when they are down...Frank Martin wanted to be the coach that yells at players all the time, and today's kids don't care for it.

But hold a minute: didn't we have talent dropping like flies right after Bill Self got here? And they weren't all Roy's recruits either. We are talking big time talent from the likes of C.J. Giles (what a guy) Alex Galindo, Micah Downs, and J.R. Giddens....all dismissed from the team for whatever various reasons.

So I guess Self and Martin are pretty much equals since they both have won a championship.

Pick on the team, the college, the coaches ... but back off the kid. Wish him well. He's a kid.

There's only a couple of months left in the season, so leaving now was a bad move for Judge, even if he intended to transfer. Makes me wonder whose idea it was.

K-State has a basketball team? Do they have uniforms and everything else?

Is Frank Martin going to become the KSU Mark Mangino? I hope not for KSU's sake, but look what a bad season does when expectations are so high. To paraphrase "Bull Durham," ...You win 20 in the show and everyone will think you're colorful. Until you win 20 in the show, you're just a...screaming clown..." The ship is sinking, the rats are bailing quick, and KSU BBall is going down in flames.

You think Martin is a screaming lunatic? -- his assts make him look like a church mouse in practice. Watch the documentary on CBS sports following KSU thru a week of practice. These players don't respond to fear-mongering these days.

Ka-boom! Talk about a team imploding. And this kid was top ten out of high school. No impact whatsoever. Think he had one good game and it was against KU last year. Shame, but I wonder if their might not be a finite number of kids that can take Martin's volatility.

Am hopefully that Wally ends up where he can get it together with the right coaching and play. Just a tremendous athlete with unbelievable ability and absolutely no confidence or clue what to do on the floor. At one time reminded me of T. Robinson with his size, shape and ability.
