40 years ago: Police, firefighters to get reduced hours

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Dec. 29, 1971:

  • Employees in the Lawrence police and fire departments were to receive a reduction in their work hours beginning Jan. 1. Policemen were to have their work week shortened from 44 to 40 hours, while firemen, who had been working a 70-hour week, would be cut back to 56 hours. The cutbacks were made possible by a half-cent city sales tax which had been approved by voters in the spring of 1971.
  • Junior Elder, Selective Service director for the state, estimated today that about 800 young men in Kansas whose inductions had been delayed in 1971 would probably escape the draft now. Secretary of Defense Melvin Laird had announced this week that no draft calls were likely until April 1972.
