25 years ago: A mini-baby-boom at LMH

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Dec. 29, 1986:

  • As of this morning, 1,100 babies had been born at Lawrence Memorial Hospital in 1986, including 21 in the past week. The birth count was the highest in Lawrence in 24 years. The record year so far was 1962, when 1,118 babies had arrived.
  • Newspapers and other media sources were releasing their lists of top news stories for the year just ending. For 1986, the top five stories according to an Associated Press poll were the Challenger explosion, the Iranian arms deal, the Chernobyl disaster, the U.S. bombing of Libya, and the peaceful uprising following “highly suspect” elections in the Philippines resulting in the ousting of President Marcos and the assumption of power by Corazon Aquino.
