100 years ago: Public outraged at shenanigans in residential district
From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Dec. 29, 1911:
- “There happened in this city last night on Ohio street what is the culmination of a most disgraceful affair. One man was arrested, but the Journal-World wants to protest against the matter stopping with one arrest. The shameless woman ought to be arrested and punished. A reliable party told this paper today that this woman had four girls from Kansas City in her house last night. Shall this be allowed in this city? Least of all shall we allow it in the residence district? The city has been clean, but the police are not doing their duty if they fail to take this case to the limit. Lawrence resents such conduct as it has been going on for some months, but the fining of one man will not be received as satisfaction. Mayor Bishop has a clean and decent administration and the people of Lawrence are looking to him to see that the police do their duty. They certainly have not done their duty in this case. There is yet time and the decency of the city ought to be looked after.”
- “Bringing the first old fashioned Christmas temperatures of the season, the thermometer today showed a drop of about 20 degrees in the Missouri Valley states…. It was 6 below at North Platte, 12 above [in Kansas City]. In the southwest the readings ranged from 18 at Oklahoma City, to 6 at Amarillo, Texas, and 2 below at Dodge City, Kansas…. The mercury in Lawrence dropped to 20 1/2 degrees according to the weather observatory at K.U. The coldest weather reported was 9 1/2 degrees above zero.”
