Less than bowled over by the season
It never fails to amaze me this time of year how the urge to “brand” everything takes the magic out of college bowl games. Or at least their names. Perhaps I’m admitting my age, but I recall when they were named for simple things, like sugar, oranges and roses. Even the most hard-bitten capitalist will have to admit there is a generic lack of charm to the Bridgepoint Education Holiday Bowl (7 p.m., ESPN). For the record, California and Texas tangle for the honors, live from San Diego.
Bleacherreport.com recently compiled a list of humbler, less marketing-driven bowls from the middle of the 20th century that included the Cigar Bowl, the Salad Bowl and the Refrigerator Bowl. The Cigar Bowl may not pass muster with today’s health police, but it’s a whole lot less of a mouthful than the GoDaddy.com Bowl.
• With “X Factor” out of the way, Fox offers multiple chances to catch reruns of “Raising Hope” (7 p.m., 7:30 p.m.) and “New Girl” (8 p.m., 8:30 p.m.), two comedies bounced all over the schedule to make room for that talent show. And it seems that without “Factor” to play the wind beneath its ratings wings, the wretched comedy “I Hate My Teenage Daughter” has been yanked from the schedule. In a vague announcement, the network informed us it would return sometime in spring.
• Cable’s love affair with Cajun country shows little sign of cooling. The brackish waters of the Bayou run neck and neck with all things New Jersey for viewers’ affections. The documentary series “True Life” (9 p.m., MTV) returns to familiar territory with “The Theriot Family: The Riot in the Bayou 2.”
• Another side of the Jersey Shore provides the setting for “According to Greta” (7 p.m., CW), a low-budget independent drama from 2009. Hilary Duff stars as a rebellious teen sent to spend time with her grandparents (Ellen Burstyn and Michael Murphy). Melissa Leo also stars as Greta’s indifferent mother.
A gritty little film shot on a shoestring, this is a far cry from “Gossip Girl.” For the record, much of “Greta” was filmed in Ocean Grove, N.J., once best known as a prim, religious summer colony located right next to the more honky-tonk Asbury Park, a faded boardwalk town long celebrated by Bruce Springsteen. Ocean Grove was also the setting for Woody Allen’s surrealist comedy “Stardust Memories” (1980).
Tonight’s other highlights
• A former prosecutor faces justice on “Harry’s Law” (8 p.m., NBC).
• Phil walks a fine line on “Modern Family” (8 p.m., ABC).
• A killing inspires too many confessions on “CSI” (9 p.m., CBS).
• A hotel maid makes a serious accusation against an Italian diplomat (Franco Nero) on “Law & Order: SVU” (9 p.m., NBC).
• A shocking video makes the Graysons suspect an inside job on “Revenge” (9 p.m., ABC).
