25 years ago: Evolution vs. creation debated locally, nationally

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Dec. 28, 1986:

A snapshot of the creationism-evolution debate from 25 years ago shows that a substantial number of U.S. college students supported equal time for “creation science” in public schools. However, several Kansas University students had a different opinion, including Paul Griswold, St. Louis junior and president of the student group Christian Science Organization. “I learned creation through church, not through school,” Griswold said. “I probably would have laughed at it if I had learned it in school.” Joe Bucha, director of Campus Crusade for Christ, disagreed, saying, “It’s important to expose non-religious students to the creation side as well as to the evolution side. Creationism should be taught as an option in public schools.” The U.S. Supreme Court was considering the issue since a federal district court and the U.S. Court of Appeals had struck down the Louisiana Creationism Act of 1981 on the grounds that it violated the Constitution’s prohibition against the establishment of religion by the state.
