100 years ago: Elks Club members buy clothing, shoes for needy residents

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Dec. 28, 1911:

  • “The Elks held their annual Christmas tree Christmas day, but that was not the extent of the Elks’ good work for the poor people of Lawrence. While the big crowd was gathering at the tree, a committee was busy taking down the names of those who really needed warm clothing…. Today the Elks were down town with these people seeing that they were given necessary clothing…. In one instance there was a mother and three boys. None of the family had a whole pair of shoes and the clothing was thin and threadbare from years of wear. All the children and the mother received nice new shoes and all the clothing necessary to withstand the real winter of today was purchased for them. One of the little fellows climbed down from the chair where he had been fitted with shoes and with his gaze fastened on the shining leather he marched up and down the store. ‘See my shoes,’ he announced to a person standing there watching. ‘First time I ever had real shiny ones.’… Between twenty and thirty families were cared for in this manner today.”
  • “This is a hard day on horses. Unless they are sharp shod they are suffering greatly. The ground is slippery and they are wrenching themselves by their effort to stand on their feet. A little attention can help out a whole lot. There should be no rapid turns, no fast driving. Every horse should be sharp shod and the hoofs ought to be looked after carefully. This is a good time for every owner of live stock to take special care of it.”
  • “Is your husband cross? An irritable fault-finding disposition is often due to a disordered stomach. A man with good digestion is nearly always good natured. A great many have been permanently cured of stomach trouble by taking Chamberlain’s Tablets. For sale by all dealers.”
