25 years ago: Preservationists hope to rescue old Oread home

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Dec. 26, 1986:

The Lawrence Preservation Alliance today announced plans to buy an old house at 1505 Kentucky that was slated for possible demolition. According to Nancy Shontz, member of the LPA board of directors and a former city commissioner, “We feel that we can contribute a great deal, give the city a real positive gift, by helping to preserve this old home.” The Oread neighborhood home, which was known as the Priestly house, was nearly 120 years old. The LPA was in the process of seeking donations and no-interest loans from its members and other concerned citizens to raise the necessary funds by the Dec. 31 deadline. “Our idea is to resell the house to someone who will live in it and protect it and maintain it and enjoy it,” Mrs. Shontz said.
