December 22, 2011, 3:48 p.m. Updated December 22, 2011, 11:13 p.m.

Lawrence Police Department officers arrested two juveniles Thursday in connection with an armed robbery at a Lawrence apartment in the 1900 block of Stewart Avenue.

At 3:30 p.m., a victim told police dispatchers he and three other people were robbed by a Hispanic male carrying a sawed-off shotgun. The victim said the suspect took cash and a laptop computer from him at gunpoint. No injuries were reported.

The Hispanic suspect was described as skinny and wearing a dark, hooded sweatshirt.

A second suspect was described as a heavy-set white man, 5-foot-9, also wearing a dark, hooded sweatshirt and blue jeans.

Officers were investigating the incident and searching the area southeast of 19th and Iowa streets Thursday afternoon, said Lawrence police spokesman Sgt. Matt Sarna.

At 9:15 p.m., police were called to Royal Crest Lanes, 933 Iowa, where a man matching the description of the second suspect had been spotted in the bowling alley’s parking lot. He was arrested Thursday night.

Sgt. Troy Squire confirmed the man arrested at the bowling alley was thought to be connected with the earlier robbery but declined to elaborate further given the ongoing investigation and the age of the suspects. The Journal-World could not confirm where the first suspect had been apprehended, but Squire confirmed both suspects were in custody.

Big props to the cops, but more important: the diligence of Lawrence civilians! Without the tip, these desperate, trashy thugs may never have been nabbed. I wonder where these fine thieves came from? I was thinking "TOP CITY" but bowling in Lawrence? Hmmnm.

If you haven't noticed fly, lawrence has quite a few desperate, trashy thugs as residents. get over it....lawrence is not as great as it used to be.

It will apparently get worse. There are gang wars in Topeka right now and I'm sure the losers will emigrate just a litle further east... namely, Lawrence.

They'll get minimal punishment for this crime and the same for the next few. Then, having convinced themselves that they can continue to commit crimes without serious repercussions, they will claim the system is unfair when some judge, in a decade or so, throws the book at them. Then will come the claims of (discrimination, racism, classism, sexism, etc.). Here's to hoping no one gets hurt in the interim.

Who has enough cash to make a robbery like this worthwhile and how would the perps know it was there?

kernal 6 years, 3 months ago

A. The perps, or someone they know, works maintenance at the apartment complex. B. The occupants have big mouths.

Just for the record I do not keep large amounts of cash in my domicile. I do have a nice collection of early 90s Olympic basketball cards (not bragging)
