Kansas City, Mo. ? Family and friends were awaiting information Thursday about a 19-year-old college student found safe five days after she went missing, but authorities said there were no plans to file charges and otherwise provided few details.

Aisha Kahn’s mother said she still hadn’t talked to her daughter, a day after Overland Park police released a statement saying law enforcement officials personally contacted the young woman, verified her identity and determined she hadn’t been taken or held against her will.

“Right now we just got the information from the cops that she is safe and sound and there are no more further details,” Fouzia Khan said Thursday in a brief phone interview. She said there was excitement among family members that she’d be found safe.

Police had been looking for the woman since last Friday, when she left her sister a voicemail saying she’d slapped a man who tried to kiss her while she was studying outside the satellite campus for the University of Kansas. Khan is a student at a nearby community college that has an agreement to offer classes at the satellite campus.

When the sister drove to get her, she found only Khan’s book bag and cellphone. Her disappearance led to a massive manhunt and prompted concerns that she had been abducted. Her husband, Waseem Khan, had gone to the media and begged for his wife’s release.

No details were released about where Aisha Khan is now or where she’d been since she was reported missing Friday. Police said they had no plans to file charges, noting that her disappearance was reported by university officials and that Aisha Khan hadn’t contacted police.

Aisha Khan lived in the nearby Kansas City suburb of Olathe. No phone number is listed for her.

“I know there are probably a lot of unanswered questions regarding Aisha Khan,” Chief John Douglass said on his blog Thursday. “The most important fact for us all to remember is that she is safe. Everything else is now a personal family matter and we respect their privacy.

“I want to thank everyone who dedicated their time and effort to this case. In the end, one that was missing has now been found.”

Family friend Sara Jawhari, 21, of Kansas City, Mo., had organized a Facebook and Twitter effort to find Aisha Khan and helped mobilize a group of volunteers who distributed flyers throughout the area. She said the family plans to release more information when they learn what happened.

“Regardless of the fact that we worked long hours to find her, I can’t judge her motives for leaving because I don’t know,” Jawhari said. “I can’t be mad right now. All I can be is happy knowing that she is safe and that we have done everything we could do to find her and bring her home safely.”

Johnson County Community College, where Aisha Khan was a student, posted updates on the search on its website and released a statement Thursday expressing relief.

“We applaud the efforts of the Overland Park Police and the assisting agencies that worked diligently to find her and know how happy her family and friends are that she is safe,” said college president Terry Calaway.
