25 years ago: Hundreds of local families ‘adopted’ for Christmas
From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Dec. 18, 1986:
About 700 needy families had been assisted so far in the local “holiday adoption” program. Hundreds of people at workplaces, churches, and schools had been working together to donate their time, effort, and money so that families would have food and gifts during Christmas. The supporting agencies were the Ballard Community Center, Douglas County Council on Aging, Lawrence Indian Center, Penn House, and the Salvation Army. About 30 families were still awaiting adoption.
