Street precedent

Renaming a road on Kansas University property is the best way to honor a beloved KU football coach.

It would be hard to identify a bigger fan of Lawrence and Kansas University than the late Don Fambrough. The former KU football coach has a special place in the hearts of many Lawrence residents.

Nonetheless, Lawrence city commissioners should be wary of the precedent they would set by renaming a portion of 11th Street near KU’s Memorial Stadium after Fambrough. Commissioner Hugh Carter has asked the commission to consider renaming the stretch of 11th Street between Mississippi Street and West Campus Road. The proposal would be less disruptive to existing addresses than a previous proposal to rename Missouri Street between the stadium and Ninth Street, but it still would create confusion.

City officials also need to consider how they would handle future requests to rename existing streets. Many deserving people have contributed greatly to KU and Lawrence. The city obviously can’t honor them all with renamed streets.

KU officials are planning to name a street on university property just west of the stadium Fambrough Way. That’s a nice honor for the coach and a more appropriate recognition than renaming a city street.

Why name a street after someone who spewed nothing but hate about a former fellow conference member? People like him are what is wrong with college athletics. On his memorial headstone by the stadium it reads "He Hated Missouri"...Is that something you would want your children to read?...Leave the street names alone...More important issues to deal with.

Funny, I never heard of the name Bob Billings until they renamed miles of WEST 15th st. in his honor and many, many more people had to change their addresses. But I did grow up knowing the Fambrough name. Fambrough is/was an icon for KU and Lawrence.

I still call Clinton Parkway 23rd. St. and I still call Bob Billings 15th. St. I know in New York City that between 5th Ave. and 7th. Ave. is "The Avenue of the Americas". It was so named in honor of the 1939 World's Fair. Most New Yorkers still just call it 6th. Ave.

I think we should rename every street in town, every year. Not for any good reason, but because apparently none is needed.

It's ridiculous to name a street after Fambrough. If you're going to start naming streets, make the first one Amos, after the founder of Lawrence.

Then, there are many other people besides football coaches who need streets named after them. Fambrough may be "an icon for KU and Lawrence," but there are many others in the past who were too, and some of them were ACADEMICS, who could inspire other people to do well in situations besides football!
