Funeral for Atchison officer is Thursday

December 15, 2011

— A police officer who died in the line of duty will be laid to rest in Atchison.

The funeral for 46-year-old Sgt. David Enzbrenner will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Ralph Nolan Gymnasium on the campus of Benedictine College in Atchison. Burial will follow at Sunset Memory Gardens in Atchison County.

Enzbrenner died Dec. 9 while he was serving a nuisance code order in Atchison. The shooter, 25-year-old Skyler Barbee, then killed himself. Authorities say Barbee and Enzbrenner had no known connection or run-ins before the shooting.

Gov. Sam Brownback ordered all flags flown at half-staff Thursday to honor Enzbrenner.

Enzbrenner, a 24-year veteran of the Atchison Police Department, is survived by a wife and three daughters.

This is so sad. Something like this just doesn't happen in Atchison. I heard the funeral was beautiful; a wonderful way to honor this officer's memory. Condolences to the family and everyone that was affected by this tragedy. They held the funeral at Benedictine college campus, which was a smart move. The Phelps clan cannot protest on private property.
