40 years ago: Lost owl takes refuge at J-W building

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Dec. 15, 1971:

Journal-World engraving department employee Bruce Silkey was shown in a photograph holding a sizeable owl. Newspaper employees arriving for work at about 7 a.m. had found the bird “fluffed up and perched on a planter railing” south of the building’s main entrance, apparently undisturbed by passers-by. When Silkey called the state fish and game authorities for advice, they recommended taking the owl to a wooded area and turning it loose. Silkey said that the bird’s left eye appeared to be slightly injured, but there were no other apparent wounds.
