13-year-old passenger injured in SUV crash along North 1500 Road

A 13-year-old Lawrence boy was taken to Lawrence Memorial Hospital after a crash Tuesday morning east of Lawrence.

Sgt. Steve Lewis, a Douglas County Sheriff’s spokesman, said Kionna Coleman, 16, also of Lawrence, lost control of the sport utility vehicle she was driving west on North 1500 Road, which is an extension of 15th Street, and struck the concrete barrier of a culvert at East 1625 Road. The SUV came to rest on its passenger side in the center of North 1500 Road. The crash occurred just after 6 a.m. Tuesday.

Another westbound vehicle driven by Joseph Weber, 27, of Lawrence, struck the top of Coleman’s vehicle. Lewis said Weber was unable to see Coleman’s vehicle in the road.

Coleman’s passenger, Zach Sanders, 13, of Lawrence, was the only person injured in the crash. He was taken to Lawrence Memorial Hospital. His injuries were not believed to be life-threatening, Lewis said, and LMH officials confirmed he had been released by Tuesday evening.

Coleman was ticketed for speeding, according to the sheriff’s office. Darkness and a wet roadway were listed as contributing factors to the crash, Lewis said.
