40 years ago: Homemade zip-gun misfires, injures owner
From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Dec. 12, 1971:
- A 19-year-old man had been treated and released from Lawrence Memorial Hospital after a homemade zip gun had backfired and wounded him in the chest. Police had been called to the Hope Plaza apartment complex, 255 N. Mich., after having received reports of a shooting in progress. The attending physician told officers that the gun had backfired when the man had tested it, and the bullet casing had entered the left side of the his chest.
- More than 250 KU students were slated to perform in the 47th annual Christmas Vespers at Kansas University was to be presented on the upcoming weekend in Hoch Auditorium. Each performance was to be preceded by a carillon recital. Free-will offerings were to be taken at each performance, with proceeds going to scholarships for music and art students.
