Kansas City, Mo. ? An oil painting from American modernist Marsden Hartley has fetched substantially more than expected at auction for a small central-Kansas gallery.

Auction house Sotheby’s said the painting sold for $3.2 million on Dec. 1. The Birger Sandzen Memorial Gallery in Lindsborg put the painting up for sale in part to help finance a renovation project. The painting, a 1919 untitled still life, had been estimated to bring the gallery about $700,000 to $900,000.

A Sotheby’s official said the $3.2 million sale price was the second-highest price for a painting by Hartley, who died in 1943. The auction house hasn’t identified the buyer.

Ron Michael, curator of the Birger Sandzen gallery, said the 54-year-old facility is in need of extensive repairs to properly conserve its works of art.
