Suspect in shooting at bar parking lot arrested

December 9, 2011, 2:34 a.m. Updated December 9, 2011, 2:35 p.m.

Lawrence police arrested a 28-year-old Lawrence man early Friday who was suspected of firing shots in the parking lot of a bar.

Sgt. Matt Sarna, a police spokesman, said officers were called at 2:35 a.m. Friday to Taste Lounge, Bar and Grill, 804 W. 24th St., after a report of multiple shots being fired from a vehicle in the parking lot.

Two men were believed to be inside the vehicle.

According to police scanner traffic early Friday, there was a pursuit of the vehicle west on 23rd Street, and the suspect was driving at speeds reaching 80 mph. Sarna said officers then located the vehicle near Bob Billings Parkway and Iowa Street.

Police arrested the 28-year-old man on suspicion of aggravated assault, criminal possession and discharge of a firearm and criminal damage to property.

Douglas County prosecutors on Friday did not make a decision about filing formal charges.

The Journal-World generally does not identify suspects unless they are formally charged. He was expected to appear before a judge today to set bond on the case.

According to Kansas Department of Corrections records, the man is on parole for a 2007 Douglas County drug possession case.

Police did not locate the second alleged suspect, but they recovered a weapon from the vehicle, Sarna said. No injuries were reported.

Earlier this year, two Leavenworth men were charged after shots were fired Oct. 9 outside Taste.

Did you mean to write that he was apprehended at 2:37 A.M. (rather than P.M.)?

If he was headed West, any guess to his intended destination!

At least they caught the SOB, now we can find out exactly where he is from without guessing.

Booking sheet shows Lawrence. Blindrabbit he lived South and East not North and West.

And besides the fact that the person was caught and jailed, what is the point of all the non-relevant blather about east, west, north, south? So nit picky and nosey! Award winning blog!

Methinks it was a reference, getaclue,, to that bastion of lawlessness twenty miles to our west. Always a reasonable assumption with these kinds of stories.

Don't forget "Rich Cultural Landscape", "Bastion of Education" or "Supportive Tax Base", which always goes hand in hand with "Deep and Varied Gene Pool"!

Isn't there a bar behind the McDonalds on 23rd street or has that been closed for a while?

acouch 6 years, 3 months ago

When the police were discussing the incident on the police scanner, they used the McDonalds as the reference point. That's why it was used in the story.

Define a "thug" bar for me?? I live right over there and have never noticed any activity. And if there is, in fact, a "thug" bar over there why is this the first we are hearing of such activity? I thought real "thugs" shoot things up all day, everyday.

Anyhow, I have been to the bar I think you are referencing once before and never returned because it appears to never be very many people in there, EVER!

I think you are barking up the wrong tree.

"Shots fired on the other side of the street from where Mr. Steak used to be!"

Terry Sexton 6 years, 3 months ago

I miss Mr. Steak. Used to work there, ya know. Made sure your dishes were shiny clean! Nobody ever shot at me, although I think the manager was tempted.

How about 'Shots were fired a couple of blocks from where that chinese restaurant was blasted years ago?' Or does that infer that chinese restaurants in town are dangerous experiences? Any eggroll eaters care to clarify this?

HA! Have a BIL who managed Mr Streak for a while. Don't think he has shot anyone. (yet)
