Atchison police officer killed in murder-suicide

December 9, 2011

— Atchison County authorities say a city police officer was shot and killed by a man who then shot himself.

Atchison County Sheriff John Calhoon says Sgt. David Enzbrenner was shot Friday afternoon while serving a nuisance order at an Atchison house.

He said the alleged shooter, 25-year-old Skyler Barbee, came "out of nowhere," fired at the officer and then shot himself.

Enzbrenner was a 24-year veteran of the Atchison police department.

Calhoon says it's not clear if Barbee lived at the home where the order was served. He says an investigation is continuing.

I hope this is not going to be a daily occurance. First at VT, now this one, both murder of a policeman and then a susicide.

What a baseless idiotic statement. You know absolutely nothing about this situation in which a person lost their life. Don't you have anything else to do. Why not just not comment if pure manufactured speculation is all you can come up with. Shamefull

My condolensces to BOTH families for their losses. It's sad to me to see such a young life go so horribly wrong. Please stop with the outlandish assumptions, he has family locally. This is very painful on both sides.

Both sides? That's terrible. This guy was doing his job and he got ambushed and murdered. That's cold blooded. Selfish despicable act by the suicide-perp.

The mentally ill normally don't commit random acts of violence against others...they usually harm themselves. Get your terminology straight, criminally ill vs. mentally ill. This entire country's healthcare system is rocky at best. You know nothing about the person that committed this crime, and he has a family with young impressionable children in it that have to face the music that a relative committed this act. This isn't just a law enforcement officer to me... Something needs to be done as far as how we raise our children, to respect themselves and others, especially those in authoritive positions. So lose the mental health, drug comments and get out to assist young children before they hit that critical moment.
