40 years ago: ‘Tree of Lights’ shows progress on fund drive

December 9, 2011

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Dec. 9, 1971:

  • A front-page photo showed a "tree of lights" constructed at Fire Station No. 1. The annual "tree," composed entirely of strings of lights, was built to indicate progress on the Salvation Army's Christmas drive. For each $10 received in donations, another bulb on the tree was lit. About 100 bulbs were illuminated so far.
  • The traditional Christmas tree had been put up in the lobby of Strong Hall on the Kansas University campus. The tree had been dug up with a ball of earth at its roots to facilitate easier re-planting after the holidays.
  • Rural Leavenworth County voters this week had turned down a proposal to incorporate their township roads into the county road system. The vote was 632 in favor of the change and 716 opposed to the road incorporation.
