Aquahawks openings: The Lawrence Aquahawks swimming team is always accepting new members. The Aquahawks are a year-round USA Swimming-sponsored competitive swim team. The Aquahawks offer a swim lesson program and competitive swim team for all ages. The Aquahawks are coached by high quality professional coaches with weekly practices geared towards a variety of skill levels. Cheer openings: Lawrence Cheer Athletics has spaces available on the competitive dance and cheer teams for the 2011-2012 season. There are openings for the 11U, 14U, 18U and college cheer teams. Dance team spots are open for junior high, senior high and college teams in pom, jazz, lyrical and hip hop. Tennis classes, lessons: The Jayhawk Tennis Center is enrolling for fall classes and lessons. JTC uses the Quick Start Tennis Program for ages 3-10 and offers a variety of classes, including Cardio Tennis, for all ages, beginner to advanced. Vipers looking: Lawrence Vipers are looking for girls with 1997/98 birthdays for a 14U C softball team. The team is looking for all positions. Eudora High baseball fundraiser: A pulled pork sandwich dinner will be held today in the commons area of Eudora High School, during the EHS Basketball Invitational Tournament, to raise funds for EHS baseball. Sandwiches will be $3.50, and sales will begin at 5 p.m.
Jingle Bell Run: The Arthritis Foundation’s Jingle Bell Run (on a certified 5K course) begins at 8:30 a.m. Dec. 11 from the Community Center, 115 W. 11th Street. Registration & packet pick-up starts at 7:30 a.m., costume judging at 8 and a one-mile family walk begins at 8:45 a.m. Pre-register at www.jbrlawrence.kintera.org.
Youth soccer camps: Several youth soccer camps will be held through March at Kansas University’s Robinson Gym. A camp for boys will be held Tuesdays, 5:30-6:15 p.m. for preschool and kindergarten, 6:30-7:30 for grades 1-5. A girls camp will be held 5:30-6:15 p.m. Tuesdays for preschool-kindergarten, 5:30-7 p.m. Wednesdays for K-4 and 5:30-7 p.m. Thursdays for grades 4-8. Baseball camps: The Jayhawk Baseball Camp has many different camp options for area youth in the coming months. The Holiday Skills Camp will be from 9:30 a.m.-3 p.m. December 28-30. There are also a variety of hitting, pitching, and catching academies in January-April, as well as a Spring Training Camp in March. Futsal registration: The Lawrence Parks & Recreation Department is taking registration for boys and girls indoor futsal (soccer), for K-sixth grades, thru Dec. 31. Cost is $40 for K-4 and $50 for fifth and sixth grades, per child. For information, call 832-7940.
Aquahawks fare well: Fifteen Lawrence Aquahawks combined for 60-plus best times at the Jim Devine Memorial Invitational Nov. 18-20 in Columbia, Mo. Included were two NCSA Junior National qualifying times, three team records, eight section cuts and three level 1/D1 cuts. Courtney Caldwell set the team record in the 13-14 girls 50 free in 24.06 making her first Junior National Cut. Ben Sloan set the team record in the 15-16 200 fly with a Junior National time of 1:53.21 and re-set his 100 back team record of 54.55. Josh Terrell made his cut in the 200 breast in 2:20.17. And Kara Krannawitter, Emma Tracey and Luke Edwards made additional Level 1 and /or D1 cuts.
Reaney record: Former Lawrence High swimmer Emma Reaney, now a freshman at Notre Dame, set the school record in the 200 individual medley at the Ohio State Invitational. Reaney went 1:58.47 to break Katie Carroll’s school record of 2:00.09 set at the 20007 NCAA Championships. Reaney then bettered it with an NCAA B-cut 1:57.67 in the finals. Reaney is 5-0 on the season in both the 200 and 400 IM.
Softball camp: Former Lawrence High softball coaches Reenie Stogsdill and Charlie Lauts will hold a softball came for 6- to 17-year-olds over the holiday break. For information, go to www.BigSpringsSports.Com.
Baseball signups: Lawrence Parks & Recreation is taking team entries for the 2012 Heinrich League & Douglas County Amateur Baseball Association season. To register, stop by Holcom Park Recreation Center or go online at www.lprd.org to down load a registration form. LPRD will accept the first eight team entries per age division.
