40 years ago: City and county consider new judicial building, road extensions

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Dec. 7, 1971:

  • Douglas County Commissioners were asking Lawrence city officials for their cooperation on a tentatively planned bond election in the spring on a city-county judicial building. Local voters had defeated a more expensive version of the project in September which would have included city-county administrative offices. The new proposal narrowed the scope for the building to include only offices for the sheriff and city police, courtroom facilities, and a jail.
  • Also discussed at the city-county meeting were proposals for road expansions, including Clinton Parkway, 31st Street east of Iowa, and Iowa Street near the turnpike access road. Clinton Parkway, a proposed extension of 23rd Street west from Iowa, was to extend four and a half miles to Clinton Dam, which was now in the late planning stages and was scheduled for completion in 1976, contingent on federal funding.
