Overheated electrical outlet caused fire Monday at Lawrence mobile home

Fire investigators have determined an overheated electrical outlet caused a fire Monday morning at an east Lawrence mobile home that displaced one family.

Division Chief Eve Tolefree of Lawrence-Douglas County Fire Medical said Tuesday morning the fire was an accident and caused an estimated $12,000 in damage.

The fire was reported at 10:19 a.m. Monday at a home in Brookwood Mobile Home Park, 1908 E. 19th St. A dog died from smoke inhalation.

The family was not home when the fire started. Jane Blocher, executive director of the Douglas County chapter of the American Red Cross, said Tuesday the agency provided a woman, her four children and her boyfriend with lodging and funds for food, clothing and linens.

The family has also received other clothing donations, Blocher said, and family members are currently looking for more-permanent housing.
