Hundreds line up for Obama’s speech in Osawatomie

December 6, 2011

— Several hundred people have braved freezing weather for the opportunity to hear President Barack Obama speak in a small Kansas town.

Obama chose Osawatomie for Tuesday afternoon's event because President Teddy Roosevelt gave a speech in the town in 1910 extolling government intervention in the economy on behalf of the disadvantaged.

But Anthony DeLeon, a Tyson Foods manager in nearby Gardner, said Obama has yet to deliver on the change he promised in 2008. DeLeon is a registered Democrat, but he's not sure he'll vote for Obama's re-election.

Alice Heath, a 62-year-old retired food service worker, plans to vote for Obama a second time. But she's looking for him to improve the economy.

Kansas seems certain to vote Republican in next year's presidential election, as it has since 1964.

It must be extremely difficult to post a link to the actual speech. http://www.whitehouse.gov/live Right Now!

Let's hope the teleprompter doesn't freeze up.

Such an event would have totally perplexed Reagan, king of the teleprompter.

i thought downtown lawrence would've been cleared out of people since our dear leader was close, but there wasn't a place to park.

Frederic Gutknecht IV 3 years, 5 months ago

Your lunacy detector is still quite broken, I guess.

Obama is a politician. If you have a problem with that...GOOD! Let's have no more purchased platforms of lies!

I'm against the feds okaying gun sales to a foreign government that is highly likely to allow a lot of those guns to wind up in the hands of drug cartels.

Ohhhhhh! He drew hundreds!!!!!? I thought all of Lawrence would have braved the dusting of snow to see their fearless leader. HaHa!

kochmoney 3 years, 5 months ago

Lawrence is the home of some very educated people, so they knew from reading their local paper that this was a ticketed event, limited to the 400 attendees who stood in line for those tickets on Sunday.

You'd like to think people like her are the exception, but unfortunately I'm sure that most folks vote "for the party, not the (person)"

and, you can get anything you want, at Alice's restaurant ...

LOL. The teleprompter must have said "texas". What a maroon.

beatrice 3 years, 5 months ago

I guarantee that the next person you vote for for President uses a teleprompter when giving speeches. Why such a disengenuous attack then, when you know you don't hold others to the same, no teleprompters allowed, standard? Is that really the substance of your attack?

Why didn't talk about hope and change?

You, sir, exhibit the epitomy of "stupid" in maintaining your name-calling, and I will not countenance being called stupid. From now on, any comment I see that you make will be flagged for non-rational discussion by name calling. I have no idea whether your type of ranting is protected by the terms of service on this site, but I will make a concerted effort to stop your silliness as I can. Please, use some adult words and phrases, preface your use of epithets with "in my opinion", and try, just try to make some sense. Thank you for your kind patience.

math...you sound like a total winner.....the media is sooooo out to get you and your dumb gop candidates. Did you totally buy into whatever Pillboy said on KMBZ today? after all a fired KC Royals employee knows everything. Especially when equally intelligent lemmings are believing said Pillboy as their annoited one. With all of the losers the geriatric oppressive partisans have marched out and and tossed to the curb because they were a. dumb, b. adulterers,, or c. not able to follow your ridiculous dogma of litmus tests you must really feel confident....Mr. Obama has tried valliantly to get this country out of an inherited mess that amnesiacs like you deny and as he's done this you and your amnesiacs have filibustered and out and out made up stuff because your fellow populace is dumb enough to buy into it. The best you can do is trot out rehashed dogma from an 1980's GOP star who probably had alzheimers in office through most of his second term that didn't work then and wouldn't work now. Maybe the don and his wonderful hair can save you all from your self fulfilling rapture of destruction. Bring it......

Some of us have both jobs and rational thinking skills and can clearly see that progressive taxation has not been and will not be the ruination of our neighbors. I'm sorry that your bitterness and hate have blinded you to reality.

kochmoney 3 years, 5 months ago

Yes, it was entirely the Democrats idea to invade Iraq, and poor Bush just had to deal with the consequences of a decision he didn't at all make or drum up a case for. Thanks for the revised history lesson.

hey40....had the same job in Lawrence for 14 years and health insurance. Start talking to real people and not believing the stereotypes your radio and tv dimwit program your brain with. It's a shame that you sound like Archie Bunker from my childhood but then none of you have really evolved and that's the problem with Kansas. You sound like a lemming looking for someone to tell you who the boogey man is....

Wonder how much tax money was wasted on this very partisan speech in which Mr. Obama attacked his Republican opponents?

thebigspoon 3 years, 5 months ago

Absolutely none. The trip was a campaign appearance and, thus, paid for by the Democratic Party. Anythying else?
