25 years ago: KU libraries suffer financial blow

December 6, 2011

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Dec. 6, 1986:

Due to a combination of the U.S. dollar's lower value in comparison to other currencies and the probable loss of more than $158,000 in state funds, the Kansas University library system was going to "absorb a stiff blow," according to KU Chancellor Gene Budig, who added, "Its book acquisitions will slow to a trickle during the spring semester." Purchases of foreign books, periodicals, and journals was expected to take a hit; additionally, $26,000 was to be taken from the salaries of full-time employees with $132,000 coming from allocations for book acquisitions. It was "an extremely serious matter," said James Ranz, KU dean of the libraries, "because we simply won't be able to support the various teaching research programs going on."
