Man arrested after Jefferson County shooting

A Jefferson County man was arrested late Sunday morning after a shooting in rural Valley Falls, about 40 miles northwest of Lawrence.

Jefferson County emergency personnel responded to a reported shooting at a residence near the intersection of Edwards Road and 142nd Street about 10:30 a.m.

According to law enforcement officials, a man called Jefferson County Dispatch to report that he shot a man who attacked him. William Schoonover, 58, from rural Valley Falls, sustained one gunshot wound to the left side of his chest. Schoonover was alive and conscious when authorities arrived and was transported to Stormont-Vail Regional Health Center in Topeka by ambulance. He was in surgery Sunday afternoon.

A Stormont-Vail representative could not confirm if Schoonover was a patient as of Sunday night.

The man who is alleged to have shot Schoonover, a 62-year-old from rural Valley Falls, was booked into the Jefferson County Jail on suspicion of intentional murder in the second degree. The charges could be revised.

The suspect was not injured.

The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office is still investigating the shooting.
