A Jefferson County man was arrested late Sunday morning after a shooting in rural Valley Falls, about 40 miles northwest of Lawrence.

Jefferson County emergency personnel responded to a reported shooting at a residence near the intersection of Edwards Road and 142nd Street about 10:30 a.m.

According to law enforcement officials, a man called Jefferson County Dispatch to report that he shot a man who attacked him. William Schoonover, 58, from rural Valley Falls, sustained one gunshot wound to the left side of his chest. Schoonover was alive and conscious when authorities arrived and was transported to Stormont-Vail Regional Health Center in Topeka by ambulance. He was in surgery Sunday afternoon.

A Stormont-Vail representative could not confirm if Schoonover was a patient as of Sunday night.

The man who is alleged to have shot Schoonover, a 62-year-old from rural Valley Falls, was booked into the Jefferson County Jail on suspicion of intentional murder in the second degree. The charges could be revised.

The suspect was not injured.

The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office is still investigating the shooting.

A man called Jefferson County Dispatch and reported he shot someone who attacked him. He said the man was bleeding heavily but was alive and conscious.

According to discussion on dispatch, the man, who is in his 50's, suffered one gunshot wound to the left side of his chest. A dispatcher advised law enforcement that the shooting occurred at 6152 142nd St. in the Delaware Township.

---okay Chris, please edit this for clarity.
is the man who was attacked the one refered to as "the man" in the third sentence?" I kinda think not, but I assume since he was attacked, he's injured too?

"this home defended by Smith and Wessen?"

another gun stopping a crime, it seems from initial reportage. stats on these gun incidents isn't even reliably collected.

You are right. According to dispatch, the caller was attacked by a 50 year-old-man, shot the attacker, and called 911 to report the shooting.

thanks for the clarification Chris. looks more like authorities think the guy supposedly defending himself might have been the agressor by the later update.

Articles can be revised after the fact. The story you read can be much different than the story previous posters read (as is the case in this scenario).

Perhaps the problem is using the plural pronoun "them" to refer to the singular noun "the individual".

It could have been more clearly written, but it wasn't really all that difficult to figure out. Determining antecedents of pronouns can sometimes be tricky, but competent native speakers can usually understand just fine.

i understand.... sumtimes you just have to read what the story says.

---too often we are saying "they" when we mean "he or she."

Actually no it would not be aggravted assault;

Agg. Assault is intentionally placing another person in reasonable apprehension of immediate bodily harm.(a) With a deadly weapon; (b) while disguised in any manner designed to conceal identity; or (c) with intent to commit any felony.

I believe what you were thinking is Agg. Battery. But unfortunately none of us know the true story of what took place except those involved. With that in mind I think it’s say to say that Law Enforcement does the best they can with the information they discovery along with what the evidence points too. So apparently theres some information they have that we do not have privilege to know just yet!
