40 years ago: Community garden project benefits children… and tomato-lovers

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Aug. 31, 1971:

  • Lawrence policeman Robert Davis had been suspended without pay from the force because he had refused to shave off his mustache. Capt. Merle McClure, acting police chief, said that officers were told upon being hired that mustaches and beards were not permitted.
  • About twenty young people had participated in the Ballard Community Center’s garden project over the summer. The youths had helped cultivate a patch of tomatoes which they were now selling to local grocery stores as well as door-to-door. The children had agreed to split their money three ways: one part “fun” money; one part to be turned over to their parents for school supplies and clothes; and one part to buy seeds for the next year’s garden.
  • Lawrence was entering its fourth week without significant rainfall, with prospects for relief looking slim. Chances of rain continued to be forecast at less than 10 percent.
