25 years ago: Neighbors object to proximity of new housing development

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Aug. 31, 1986:

  • Lawrence-Douglas County Planning Commission members had expressed dismay over two angry letters received from neighbors of a proposed low-income housing development. Landowners near the proposed Lawrence Housing Authority project on the north side of East 21st Street Terrace had asked planners to consider requiring a privacy fence between the properties, in addition to a proposed screen of pine trees. One letter warned that “disregard for the concerns of the residents” would drive homeowners west, making East Lawrence a “low income potential slum area.”
  • Former students of University High, a school that had closed in the spring of 1950, had recently gathered in the Kansas Union to share old memories and renew old friendships. The small school, which had opened in 1911 on the Kansas University campus, had been designed to provide teaching experience for education students.
