100 years ago: Area hunters eager on eve of hunting season

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Aug. 31, 1911:

  • “Now is the season of the year when the sportsman spends his evenings oiling and polishing up his trusty double barrel, patching up his hunting clothes, and preparing to pitch his camp out among the ducks and the geese along some stream, there to lay in wait for them. But he must wait until the first of September to take his first shot. Tomorrow is that date. However, there will be little hunting yet, as it is still too warm for the ducks to fly but some of the most ardent of the huntsmen have already seen a couple of the flock.”
  • “Tired, hungry and footsore, a party of pedestrians arrived in Lawrence last night after a walk from Atchison, Kansas. They began to arrive in Lawrence last night about 5 o’clock and it was not until 6:30 that the last one straggled into the Eldridge hotel. They were a tired bunch and lost little time in getting into the ‘hay.’ A good night’s rest and this morning aside from a few aching joints and bruised feet the boys said they were feeling fine.”
